Our Organic Vegetable Garden

The garden you see here was established in September 2007 as one of our initiatives to become a more sustainable business.  The garden supplies produce for our cafe and feed for animals and birds in the park. Any waste from this garden is recycled into our worm farms and compost heap, which, in turn comes back to the garden.

Organic gardening works in harmony with the environment by using natural controls to reduce or eliminate pests and disease in your garden and natural sources of enrichment for your garden soil. Organic produce has fuller flavour, higher antioxidant levels and no harmful chemicals that can affect the human body. The condition of the soil is fundamental to all plant health and we employ practices such as crop rotation, companion planting, green manure crops, composting, mulching and self made liquid fertilisers. Planting by the moon is also considered when growing certain species.

Everything in this garden is grown from certified organic seed. The majority of seeds used are heirloom seeds from plants that have existed for hundreds of years. In organic gardening certain insects are encouraged as they are beneficial in controlling other pest species in the garden.
