Imported Birds

Although New Zealand already has a very wide range of native birds, Early European settlers began to introduce foreign birds to the wild.

There are many reasons that the birds were introduced. Early farmers released birds to control insect pests, or for hunting and sport. The majority of imported birds however, were brought to New Zealand for sentimental reasons by homesick settlers. Because of this, many imported bird species are very colourful and attractive.

Many species of imported bird are now self-sustaining in the wild.
