One of the largest pigeons in the world, the New Zealand Pigeon plays a vital role in the ecology of the forest.
Pigeons were an important source of food for the Maori who snared or spared them in great numbers and preserved them in their own fat. They also used the feathers for cloak making and other decorative work.
