New Zealand's unique wildlife
New Zealand is home to some beautiful native animals that we treasure as national icons.
The kiwi for example is a unique New Zealand animal that we can claim as our own – so much so that around the world New Zealander’s are referred to as ‘Kiwis’. However since colonisation, the native animals are under threat due to the introduction of imported animals.
Throughout New Zealand there are organisations that work hard to reduce the threats to our native animals, which are unfortunately affected by human activity as well.
In this section you will learn about the huge array of native and introduced animals in New Zealand and what challenges they face today.
