Morepork
Ruru in Maori means ‘big eyes’ and it is easy to see how this native bird of prey obtained its name.
The Morepork is common throughout most of the country and is related to the Australian boobook owl. The morepork diet usually includes moths and beetles caught on the wing as well as small animals such as mice, baby rats, lizards and birds usually no larger than themselves.
