National Kiwi Hatchery Tour
See real kiwi conservation in action
Rainbow Springs is proud to be home of the National Kiwi Hatchery Aotearoa, the world's leading kiwi hatchery! We're extremely proud to be have hatched over 2,000 kiwi chicks to date, making us the world's largest and most successful hatching centre.
Visitors to Rainbow Springs can enjoy a special 'behind the scenes' tour of our Hatchery to see real kiwi conservation in action. National Kiwi Hatchery Tours are included in the Essentials and Ultimate Day Pass options (not in the Lite Pass).
Tours depart every 30 minutes from 9.00am to 4.30pm.
Learn all about the efforts of our kiwi husbandry team, discover what it takes to hatch a chick... and if you're really lucky, see baby chicks in person!
Some visitors may have the chance to witness the Kiwi chicks getting a health check, being weighted or fed - the routine usually takes place in the morning; regardless of the time of day you visit the Hatchery, our guides and Kiwi caregivers always aim to give our manuhiri [visitors] the best Kiwi experience!
As world-leaders in kiwi conservation, we follow best industry standards when it comes to our animal welfare. Unfortunately this does mean our manuhiri cannot take pictures inside the Kiwi Hatchery or nocturnal house for the well-being and safety of our chicks and adult birds. We thank our manuhiri [visitors] for their understanding.
